There was a time a few weeks ago when Real Madrid fans were practically begging José Mourinho to start Bernardo Silva more often. There were lots of consecutive games where he did not start, and there were even more games where he was brought on too late or not brought on at all. It made no sense, given the number of things he solves in the buildup for the team, as well as the quality that he has and the way he complements some of Real Madrid's midfielders.

However, José Mourinho's move to start Silva in the Clásico looks to have completely changed the script for the Portuguese midfielder. He has since started all of Real Madrid's games and looks much more involved than he did before. Silva is a player who is past prime, which is quite obvious to see, but even then he provides a lot of value to this Real Madrid team.

Real Madrid need Bernardo Silva expeditiously, and Jose Mourinho is finally realising that

This entire setup has been begging for a player like Silva: someone who is not scared of having the ball, who can link up the defence and midfield quite easily, and someone who is able to consistently demand the ball and make space for others by consistently moving between the lines to help with the buildup.

Real Madrid have not had that profile in a very long time, especially with Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield. These two have been very immobile together, and there's a reason why these two are just not compatible.

Silva, on the other hand, has been compatible with both of them, which is exactly why having him in the starting XI is hugely beneficial for Real Madrid. Fans were really worried about him not having a huge role in this team after seeing so many games without a start, but everyone is glad that has changed for the better.

Silva will obviously have to be rotated quite a bit so that Mourinho is able to preserve his best performances for the big games of the season. Generally speaking, a player like Silva should be starting most of Real Madrid's games, especially given the amount of problems he solves on a consistent basis, even on a bad day.

The Portuguese midfielder is usually at least helping the team with their buildup and structure, which is a very refreshing thing to have in this midfield. How many more matches Silva starts is up to Mourinho, but so far it looks very good for Real Madrid.
