Real Madrid were said to be highly intersted in signing a new defensive midfielder to compete with Aurelien Tchouameni or even replace him, and they were linked to a number of interesting names at the position. Rodri, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Alexis Mac Allister, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Enzo Fernandes have all been linked to the Royal Whites this summer transfer window, but, ultimately, Real decided to extend Tchouameni and tell him and the world that they were never looking at any other midfielders or doubting the Frenchman in the slightest.
But Real Madrid fans have always felt that Jose Mourinho personally still wants another midfield star to fill out the No. 6 position and provide an alternative to Tchouameni, if anything, and there were plenty in the Spanish media relaying that Jose wanted to sign Enzo from Chelsea above all else.
Chelsea were making things complicated, of course. Despite Enzo and his agent Javier Pastore making it clear that the 25 year old wanted to leave Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were asking for a whopping 150 million euros and were even more reluctant to sell after the Xabi Alonso hire. And if he were to be sold to Real Madrid, Alonso wanted Aurelien Tchouameni back in a swap from his former employers.
Enzo Fernandez rumors are not dead yet
Even though Real Madrid have dropped their interest in Enzo and even made a wild public statement that they have no interest in the player, The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg has opened the Enzo transfer track for Real Madrid. Per the British newspaper, there are still suggestions behind the scenes that Real Madrid remain interested in an Enzo transfer if possible.
Enzo Fernandez has been incredible at the 2026 World Cup, arguably an even bigger standout than what fellow World Cup finalist Rodri - another who dreams of Real Madrid but was rejected - has done in shutting down the entire midfield, when factoring in the goals he has scored.
Fernandez shocked the world with his bomb from the blue to change the course of the semifinals against England, and that is the sort of game breaking, goal scoring defensive midfielder who can play elite defense, control the game on the ball, and still change matches with one shot that Real Madrid could use.
Cost is an issue, but while Real Madrid fans may not like his grating attitude as an opponent, he, like summer signing Marc Cucurella, is the kind of player every team would love to have in their own ranks.
