Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is having an incredible start to the World Cup tournament, bagging braces and performing at a higher level than he did in the last few months of the La Liga season, which, to the cynical Madridistas, may not be such a surprise amidst accusations internally that he was sandbagging it for France and the World Cup.
Mbappe at France has always been different gravy, and even the PSG fans who strongly disliked Mbappe cannot help but put their country first and root for him to the fullest for Les Bleus. He comes off more like a leader and is able to play more freely with confidence for France than even at Real Madrid.
New Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has taken it upon himself to fulfill president Florentino Perez's main reason for hiring him, and that is to make Mbappe just as much of a killer for Real Madrid as he is for his national team. Mourinho believes in Mbappe's talent and has made it clear publicly that he is here to support the player and get the most out of him in the team structure.
Kylian Mbappe will get to play like he does for France
According to a new report from Diario AS, via Madrid Xtra, the new coach will change the Real Madrid tactics and playing structure in the attack to revolve around Kylian Mbappe. Mourinho and Madrid will not change Mbappe but rather try to tailor the tactics to the player. Specifically, they do not want Mbappe to have to pigeon hole himself into something that he isn't, which is a true, box playing No. 9. They want him to play more freely with the freedom to maneuver outside the box with space instead of being a classic No. 9.
That sounds like a mix of the Karim Benzema role that the former French superstar played for Real Madrid, particularly after Cristiano Ronaldo left and Gareth Bale declined, and what Mbappe is currently doing for the French national team.
For France, Mbappe gets to rove around the front, make the runs in behind, collect the ball, and move where he needs to in order to get open. The other players have to play for him, but it's not like Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, and a healthy Rodrygo Goes were not already doing that. Real Madrid can play like France with Mbappe, but it is a matter of actually trying to do that properly. Mbappe has just been begging to play like this, more freely, and it is obvious to see that in his body language. He will finally get that chance under Joes Mourinho in 2026/27.
