Real Madrid fans had always suspected there was something off about the timeline of events of the Kylian Mbappe hamstring injury. It was first termed a season ending injury, then it was reported to be an overload. Mbappe was seen on holiday in Italy, then he suddenly came back to training to recover after backlash and with the team doing better without him.
The real twist came on the eve of El Clasico. Mbappe had been training without any issues and looked ready to be in the squad, but all of a sudden, he pulled out of the last training session reportedly in the final minutes. Not long after, it was reported in the Spanish press that Mbappe was not going to be in the starting lineup, so many Madridistas surmised that Mbappe threw a fit and did not even travel with his teammates because he wouldn't be starting. During the game, Mbappe said nothing - and he had never said anything at any point in the previous games when Madrid were winning without him - until they were down 2-0, when he posted "Hala Madrid" as if to troll his teammates for losing without him.
Kylian Mbappe put himself over Real Madrid
Mbappe returned to training and played against Real Oviedo, coming off the bench to record an assist in the 2-0 win for Real Madrid. He unleashed on Alvaro Arbeloa, invoked the name of Xabi Alonso for the first time all season, seemed to invent a quote about being told he was the fourth choice attacker, and even chastised his teammates for losing without him in the Copa del Rey months ago. In response, Arbeloa simply said that he didn't start Mbappe because he needed to be eased into action after returning from injury.
Well, Mbappe's vitriol at the coach at not starting made Real Madrid fans call into question his injury and him pulling out the night before El Clasico injured even more. And now, Diario AS are reporting, via Madrid Xtra, that Kylian Mbappe wanted to play against Barcelona at all costs. But when he found out that he would not be starting, that's the moment it all went downhill, with Mbappe then leaving training with discomfort. He also wasn't made an emergency option by Alvaro Arbeloa, which was the case earlier this season in the Supercup Final back when Xabi Alonso was the manager.
All of this reporting furthers want Real Madrid supporters had suspected. Mbappe threw a tantrum at not starting El Clasico and decided not to play. And Arbeloa saw through the games, not rewarding Mbappe by making him an emergency option. Then against Oviedo, he got to play but only off the bench, and that's when the mask fell off.
