There's one transfer target Real Madrid shouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole this summer

With Real Madrid set to complete another season without a trophy, Florentino Perez and the club will be after more upgrades to deal with the obvious weaknesses remaining in a squad that had issues that should have been addressed years ago back when Carlo Ancelotti was in Flo's ears about them.

At least one center back needs to be brought in, and, preferably, players like Raul Asencio, David Alaba, and Antonio Rudiger all discarded in a cleaning of the house. Real Madrid only have one great center back right now in Eder Militao, and he has become too hard to rely on as an injury risk. And last summer's addition, Dean Huijsen, clearly isn't ready for the elite level yet.

So Real Madrid need to prioritize defense again this summer transfer window. One of the names that was linked to Los Blancos last year and will be once again this year is Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, but far from a great leader with a World Cup pedigree, the Argentinian international is a player Real Madrid would be better off avoiding.

Another Tottenham star to avoid for Real Madrid

Beyond heading into the window with an injury, Romero, though he was not the chief issue for Tottenham this season, has to be considered part of the problem in the myriad of reasons why Spurs are staring down relegation from the Premier League.

Real Madrid are a club built around being the very best both in quality and mentality, and an absentee captain who made recurring blunders of a basic and entirely avoidable variety is hardly the kind of character Los Blancos want to bring in to save their defense and upgrade a squad that has failed to adequately challenge eternal rivals Barcelona in La Liga in back to back seasons.

Cristian Romero is one for Atletico Madrid, not Real Madrid. And Madridistas would rather be spared the praise for ball playing ability, as being able to pass the ball out the back is a bare minimum requirement, rather than something that should be the source of endless adulation. Because if Real Madrid want to go that route, Nico Schlotterbeck is both younger and a far superior ball progressor than the inconsistent Romero.

While Romero is a good player and could be amazing in La Liga, he is not a Real Madrid coded center back. The mistakes he makes, the lack of leadership he has shown, and his pedigree of being one of the starters to put Tottenham in the relegation places is enough to undo him as an overly expensive center back option for Los Blancos who is already nearing 30 years of age.
