No player on Real Madrid is as important as Thibaut Courtois, because the Belgian shot stopper is such a security blanket in goal that he gives everyone else a sense of calm. And we have seen so many times over the years, Courtois being that voodoo factor in Madrid's favor, helping them survive tense matches, such as that 2021/22 Champions League Final against Liverpool.
Funny enough, Courtois nearly did the same for Belgium, as the Red Devils were tied with Spain in the World Cup quarterfinals despite having an inferior team. But Tibo went down with a muscular injury late in the game and had to be forced off, with Senne Lammens of England's "Red Devils", Manchester United, coming in and spilling the game to the way too clutch Mikel Merino.
Real Madrid fans are always worried about any small injury to Courtois, who actually is taking a year sabbatical from Belgium to avoid more wear and tear and burnout, which is obviously music to the ears of Madridistas - and maybe even the Belgians, given the next year's matches are all rather meanginless anyway.
Courtois has no worries
As relayed by Madrid Xtra, Thibaut Courtois just dropped an injury update that will have fans pleased as the 2026/27 La Liga and Champions League seasons start up again around the corner, as it sounds like Courtois is fired up and ready to go without any issues.
Tibo said, “My injury? I feel no pain, anymore. I will be ready when I’m back for pre-season.”
The injury woes of the World Cup are nearly past him, and it sounds like Courtois will be back on the pitch for Real Madrid soon enough with no issues at all starting Matchday 1 of La Liga on August 16 against Racing Santander, a throwback name of Spanish top flight years passed.
Although Real Madrid have a great backup in Andriy Lunin, who would be a starter on most teams in European football including a few top ones, he is clearly no Courtois, as evidenced by a drop off in his performances last season when Tibo could not play for a few games.
Real Madrid have a star studded attack that just got even crazier under Jose Mourinho with the sudden signing of Yan Diomande from the Bundesliga, but this team unmistakably belongs to Courtois, who is also the true leader of the team with his emotional calm.
