Real Madrid kicked off their 2026/27 Champions League campaign grabbing all three points after a nail biting win over Italian champions Inter Milan. While many would be satisfied with the three points for a majority of the fanbase the performances from both individual players as well as the team as a whole simply has not been good enough, and the fans let the players hear it at full time with deafening whistles and while that won't sit well with some players, one player is speaking up in defense of the fans.
While speaking to the media following Real's narrow 2-1 Champions League win over Inter Milan Thibaut Courtois was asked about the boos and whistles from the fans, and he gave a response that is honestly music to fans' ears. The Belgian went on to say:
"Whistles from the fans? We have NOT won a major trophy in 2 years. They are entirely within their rights."Thibaut Courtois

Leave it to Thibaut Courtois to once again be the voice of reason at Real Madrid. The Belgian has arguably been the best and most important player for Los Blancos for the past few season and shouldn't have to be the one to come out and defend the fans for expecting more from the players yet here he is doing it again. This isn't the first time this calendar year we've seen Courtois be on the fans side, as he was one of the few players who were outraged following Real's embarrasing 4-2 loss to Benfica in the Champions League league phase back in January.
Courtois is constantly the one demanding more out of his teammates and is always the one to step up and speak out about poor form, when he himself comes to Real's rescue more than anyone else. Fede Valverde somehow walked away with the Man of the Match award in Real's win over Inter Milan but if it wasn't for the seven saves from Courtois is would have been an embarrassing scoreline for Los Blancos at the Bernabeu.
While loads of boos and whistles were directed at the team as a whole following the match, the whistles were initially directed at Vinicius Jr following his 89th minute substitution after yet another terrible performance, and like Courtois said, it is within the fans rights to whistle the players when they aren't performing, it's not uncalled for or too harsh to say that based on what we've seen so far this season, Courtois is the only player that can escape the whistles given the heroics he's already put on display.
Like the Belgian was saying Los Blancos haven't won anything of meaning in two years meaning this season the pressure is on the players and the manager to deliver and so far the prospect of any silverware is looking dier. If this new generation of Real Madrid players were serious about getting back to the top and delivering for the fans, they would use the boos and whistles as motivation to be better like we saw from the previous generation from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and so many more to step up, put their egos aside and deliver for the fans and the betterment of the team.
