Thibaut Courtois has played every minute for Real Madrid this season. At 34, he is still relatively young for a goalkeeper and hopes to continue competing for many more years. Courtois has even said he sees his time at Los Blancos going beyond his playing career.
In an interview with Forbes, Courtois said, "Life after playing? Maybe working in the goalkeeping department at Real Madrid, establishing a top academy, developing a Thibaut Courtois instead of buying one. I still want to play five or six more years."
Courtois' focus will be on the Madrid derby this weekend. However, it must be noted that his contract with Real Madrid expires at the end of the season. There have been reports that Los Blancos are planning on extending his deal for another year.
If Courtois wants to keep playing until his late 30s/ early 40s, then he may need to have a stint at another club after Madrid. He is still on top of his game and a Belgian international with 115 caps.
Could Thibaut Courtois play for another club?
Since joining Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018, Courtois has been linked with other clubs. This includes the likes of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Al-Ahli.
The keeper will want to keep playing at the highest level in Europe. Players moving to Saudi Arabia are often going for one thing: money. He is business-minded, and the investment company he co-founded, NXTPLAY, owns KRC Genk, Le Mans FC, and CD Extremadura.
Courtois appears to be keeping his options open for when he does retire from playing and already holds UEFA’s A and B licenses. However, he is not sure about becoming a manager. Becoming a goalkeeping coach at Real Madrid could be a perfect fit for him.
Los Blancos bought Courtois for £35 million, which is a relatively small change considering the astronomical fees paid for players these days. Real Madrid have been a buying club since Florentino Pérez's first stint as president. However, they have had notable keepers come through their ranks.
Iker Casillas came through Real Madrid's academy and went on to play 725 times for them. He is now a club representative. It is great that Los Blancos have these ties with former players. Courtois knows what it takes to become a top goalkeeper. His immediate focus will still be on playing for Real Madrid. However, fans will love to see him back at the club after he finally decides to hang up his gloves.
