I’ve waited for this opinion to not be categorized as outlandish, so hear me: I think Thibaut Courtois has been the most important Real Madrid player in the past two years or so.
He’s been so good and pivotal in so many major achievements, and I think his contribution to the collective effort of this team has been greater than that of Vinícius Jr. and others.
It is a no-brainer that his contract, which ends next summer, should be renewed as soon as possible. He’s too important to be neglected and deserves a renewal for all that he has done.
The player, too, has said that he wishes to continue at Real Madrid. In a recent interview, Courtois won the hearts of Real Madrid fans with his answer regarding his Los Blancos future.
Before the game against Pachuca in the Club World Cup later tonight, the goalkeeper was asked about the speculations around his future with Los Blancos. He said:
“I hope I can renew. I’m very happy at Real Madrid; playing here is a dream, and every year that passes is another dream. I’m at the club’s complete disposal. They know I want to stay here... and hopefully retire here.”
Courtois has been the most consistent servant to Real Madrid
I cannot emphasize enough what the Belgian means to this squad. Yes, his backup, Andriy Lunin, is also very good, but he is no match for Courtois at this moment, despite the Belgian’s age.
He’s, in fact, so good that I feel bad for Lunin, who has always been at his best when given the opportunity to play.
From the perspective of a Real Madrid fan, I would like him to stay, but from the heart of a football fan, it’s better for the Ukrainian to leave, because I don’t believe Courtois is going to be on a decline anytime soon.
He can be at the top level with Real Madrid for at least two or even three more seasons. Lunin, on the other hand, has the opportunity to move to a club where he gets more importance. He had several offers earlier this year, but as of now, his plan is to continue with Madrid.
