The England national team was able to survive a harrowing encounter at the Azteca, handing host nation Mexico their first ever loss in Mexico City in the World Cup, winning 3-2 after a rapid fire first half brace from Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham.
It's a shame, though, that manager Thomas Tuchel did not call up Jude's close friend and Madridista teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back, because surely the game would not have been as nervy for the Three Lions had Trent been called up to the squad.
With Reece James unable to play and still out due to a hamstring injury suffered in the group stage vs. Ghana, England once again turned to Bayer Leverkusen's mediocre defender Jarell Quansah at right back, even though he is a center back.
Trent is still haunting Tuchel
Quansah had a shocking decision, raising his boots up and nearly breaking the legs of a Mexico player, causing a well deserved red card that nearly changed the game for England for the worse. England held on with dogged defending and heroics from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but it was no thanks to Quansah, who was honestly terrible before that tackle anyway.
Clearly, Quansah belongs nowhere near the England national team squad, and it is ridiculous to think that he or Djed Spence are anywhere near even half the players that Trent Alexander-Arnold is. Everyone in Englnad is still baffled as to how Thomas Tuchel allowed his ego to take over and leave Trent off entirely, because there is no way, on merit, Trent does not belong in this squad.
England are going to be tested even more against a Norway side in the quarterfinals that ripped through Brazil, taking full advantage of the Selecao's own fullback problem. Reece James will hopefully be back by then, but what if he isn't? What if he gets injured yet again? What if he is not 100 percent and stinks up the joint?
Tuchel had a great equalizer and chance creating outlet on the right hand side. Right now, between his right back problem and Bukayo Saka playing like a second rate winger, England has nothing going on an entire flank. And if it were not for having arguably the two best players on this entire planet in Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, England would be sitting at home right about now. Their success is no thanks at all to Tuchel, whose Trent decision continues to haunt England.
