Real Madrid have three decent left backs in their squad in Alvaro Carreras, Fran Garcia, and Ferland Mendy, and they spent big on Carreras last summer, thinking he would be one of the best left backs in the world.

While he may still develop into a top player, the reality is that his poor performances in recent months have cast serious doubt on that. Real Madrid need more quality at left back, and in getting rid of players like Mendy and Garcia, they have room to bring in someone better. Here are three left backs worth watching this summer.

Federico Dimarco, Inter Milan

Federico Dimarco is in the peak of his prime at 28 and has been one of the best players in world football this season, and when you consider his status as a left wing back for runaway Serie A champions Inter Milan, the numbers he's putting up are honestly as impressive as what Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal are doing in the attack.

Real Madrid don't have a wing back, but they prefer more attacking minded players anyway, and Dimarco is such a great athlete and ball winner that he can defend better than a lot of the "true fullbacks" Real Madrid have been employing over the past 10 years. He's the ultimate dream prize, though signing anyone from a top team like Inter is not easy to do. Maybe Real Madrid are the one team that actually could do it.

Alejandro Grimaldo, Bayer Leverkusen

The easiest of the three players to sign, Alejandro Grimaldo is entering free agency in the summer 2027 market and just had another productive season for Bayer Leverkusen in 2025/26, made all the more impressive by the fact that Leverkusen's attack hasn't been quite as good as in the other seasons.

Real Madrid fans thought they would be getting Grimaldo for Xabi Alonso, but actually none of his stars from Leverkusen made their way to Madrid. Still, Grimaldo is an even better opportunity now with just one year left on his deal. And there is no way he says no to Real Madrid if they want him. At 30, Grimaldo has no real resale value, but at a cheap cost and with plenty of experience and technical quality, he can bring a different flavor to the squad.

Nathaniel Brown, Eintracht Frankfurt

All the big Premier League clubs have been going wild over Nathaniel Brown as a future prospect worth developing, and he is one of a number of great talents for Eintracht Frankfurt who has fallen by the way side this season due to organizational dysfunction.

Brown has been disappointing this season, but he has even more upside than Alvaro Carreras. He defends at a high level, passes as well as any young left back in the world, and has an advanced technical level. He's worth watching.
