Real Madrid have very high hopes for Trent Alexander-Arnold in the starting lineup, and while they are hedging their bets a bit by signing another world class right back this summer transfer window in Serie A champion Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, the starting job is still very much Trent's to hold onto this season.
Jose Mourinho likes his defensive options at fullback, but that is precisey why he signed Marc Cucurella on the left, insisting on that kind of a player to back Vinicius Junior up in defense. The Portuguese manager's idea is to have Cucurella stay back, unbalance the formation, and give Trent that license to go forward.
It did take Trent some time to get going, but the former Liverpool man managed to stay healthy and ended up being highly effective for Real Madrid by the end of the season. Had Kylian Mbappe and the forwards been in better form by the time Alexander-Arnold awakened, he could have posted some mighty impressive assist totals again from right back.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is a serious man
Even though he has only been there for a year, the pressure is so high at the Santiago Bernabeu that the 2026/27 season is a massive one for Trent. And he is already sending a clear message to Jose Mourinho that he is ready to compete.
As El Chiringuito noted, via the Madrid Zone, Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of the first players to show up at the Real Madrid training session to officially kick off a new offseason of work under the incoming legendary manager of Chelsea and Inter Milan fame. The other player was someone desperately fighting to stay at the club in center back Raul Asencio.
So while Trent's job is safe, for now, and he is at no risk of being sold, the former Premier League superstar is so driven to succeed and back up what he is telling the media that he is pulling a Cristiano Ronaldo by being the first man in.
Trent wants this badly. He was already a made man at Liverpool, and against the cries of being a betrayer, he left for the Santiago Bernabeu to join forces with Jude Bellingham. And if anything, the snub from the England national team, now headed to the World Cup semifinals, has given Trent even more ammunition to show up and ball out. Jose loves players like this, and he is definitely going to notice what Trent is doing.
