Real Madrid superstar Vincius Junior had another incredible performance despite Brazil falling 2-1 to the Norwegian national team in the World Cup Round of 16. At least two of the chances he created should have been goals for the Selecao, while he had Borussia Dortmund star fullback Julian Ryerson constantly on skates with six dribbles completed. The only thing that could hold back Vinicius was the inclusion of Neymar into the game, as the veteran Brazilian slowed play down and took the ball away from Vini.
All in all, Vinicius had a great World Cup at an individual level, having been Man of the Match in all three group stage games, often scoring goals out of nowhere to prove decisive for Brazil. But for Vini, the World Cup is a failure, just as it is for all of Brazil as a nation. They have been poor at the World Cup since winning it all with Ronaldo Nazario in 2002, but this was a new low and actually their earliest exit from a World Cup in decades.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Vinicius Junior did not mince words, and he showed the strength of character that has been the hallmark of all of the Real Madrid superstars this summer, which goes to show you that a certain Xabi Alonso was horribly wrong - and probably thinking about his own personal problems - when he acted as if the Madrid players were all uncoachable egoists.
Vinicius Junior is ready for the full responsibility
Vini was front and center in his accountability, telling the press after the loss, via the Madrid Zone, "I won't give up and I will never stop trying to put Brazil on top again. I will work very hard for the next 4 years to deserve to be here again."
Neymar took on a lot of responsibility for Brazil in the 2010s and did his best to carry the Selecao to glory, often having to fall on his sword as the media lambasted him despite ignoring the fact that Brazil were contenders before he got injured and they turned into 7-1 losers to Germany without him. He got meme'd for dazzling in 2018 but getting butchered by Switzerland in a shambolic refereeing performance.
Vinicius Jr. will have to face all of that and more as he leads Brazil, because being the face of this country's football is a thankless task. But with all the racism and utter garbage he has faced in Spain, including from some fake Madrid fans recently, he is more than ready for it. Vini is that guy.
