On the pitch, Vinicius Junior was a ghost against Barcelona. The Real Madrid forward failed to leapfrog Kylian Mbappe and make a huge statement of importance in terms of his own individual quality, as Real Madrid lost 2-0 on Sunday night to Barcelona in El Clasico to seal a deserved title victory for the Blaugrana.
But there are a few truths that must be acknowledged while constructively criticizing Vinicius Jr. for a disappointing performance. The first is that the midfield was even worse than Vinicius. As the main attacking outlet, Vini stood no chance with how horrendous the service was. Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga played like they were the ones who had suffered traumatic brain injuries, with Tchou's performance in El Clasico so tragically poor that Real Madrid would not be wrong for selling him outright.
The second truth is that every great player will have an off game. In 2026, there are no Cristiano Ronaldos or Lionel Messis running about in La Liga. Everyone is fallible, and that includes the most accomplished attacking player in the league today, Vinicius Jr.
Vinicius Jr. actually cares for the badge
How you are measured as a person and as a character when you wear the arm band for a day - or even if you do not - is how you carry yourself even when the shots are not falling and the passes are not crisp. And Vinicius Jr. behaved like a leader when so many of his teammates were cowards.
He and Thibaut Courtois went out of their way to apologize to the traveling Real Madrid supporters after the game, applauding them and facing the music after a bad game. That may sound like nothing to do the broke social media trolls, but it means a whole lot to the paying fans and the long time Madridistas.
And when Raul Asencio was shoved to the ground and bullied by a crowd of Barcelona players, this enduring image of Vinicius Jr. rushing in to protect the younger player and stand up to five Barca men is one of the only positive enduring images of Real's latest Clasico embarrassment. Where was Floyd Tchouameni Jr. here? Would Kylian Mbappe ever defend a teammate like this? No, he would be too busy wining and dining himself after grabbing his hamstring.
Vinicius Jr. stunk against Barcelona. There is no hiding that. But so did the rest of the team. And whereas many of the others hit like children in a cornfield, Vinicius Jr. went down swinging. Again, that might not matter to the faux Madridistas who came after Paris kicked them out, but it matters to the ones who watched a midfield of Fernando Gago and Lassana Diarra (and would still take those guys over Muhammad Tchoui and Eduardo Camavinga).
