Vinicius Junior reportedly rejected a contract offer from Real Madrid a year ago amid the Brazilian winger's current negotiations over a new deal. There had been doubts over Vinicius' future during Xabi Alonso's reign but the Spaniard's exit earlier this month appears to have led to positivity over him extending his stay at the club.
The 25-year-old has bounced back from a difficult spell and was man-of-the-match in a 6-1 thrashing of AS Monaco in the Champions League on Tuesday. He scored and provided two assists, flourishing under caretaker manager Alvaro Arbeloa.
Vinicius' current deal expires in the summer of 2027 but he has made clear he sees his long-term future at Madrid. But The Athletic reports that he already turned down a renewal offer back in January 2025.
Vinicius rejected Real Madrid extension offer
They claim that Madrid's board had opened talks with Vinicius' camp when the team beat RB Salzburg on January 22nd, 2025. The club's general manager Jose Angel Sanchez, and his two agents and his father were present at the meeting.
The contract extension offer was believed to be around €20m after taxes but this was rejected and the club asked for a counteroffer. But this time it was Los Blancos who refused to agree on the terms presented by the Brazilian's entourage.
Vincius is said to have been looking for a package of around €30 million, including a fixed salary, bonuses for objectives and a renewal bonus. This is unprecedented at Madrid and they have been reluctant to accept.
The player's representatives pointed out that if Madrid's unofficial salary cap couldn't be broken then a player asking for more money is forced to move elsewhere and secure a signing-on fee.
While the current situation regarding a contract extension seems to be moving in a positive direction the club remain "extremely cautious" over their salary scale. This was why they weren't open to a renewal bonus and had needed the Brazil international to prove his worth by rediscovering from.
Vinicius' display against Monaco has helped his case and both parties want the player to remain in the Spanish capital. He currently earns around €18million net per year at Madrid.
Real Madrid certain Vinicius will extend

Vinicius spoke after the win over Monaco and clarified the situation by insisting he intends to be a Los Blancos player for years to come. He's been at the Estadio Bernabeu since 2018 and produced magical moments including goals in two Champions League finals.
According to Spanish outlet El Larguero (via Madrid Universal), Madrid are "certain" that Vinicius will extend his contract. The renewal is expected to take place at the end of the season and their offer isn't thought to have an expiration date unlike the one presented to Sergio Ramos years ago.
An important line from this report is that the club view his extension as "the best sportingly and economically". Vinicius has appeared 30 times across competitions this season, scoring seven goals and providing 11 assists.
