Real Madrid star striker Kylian Mbappe is coming off another season in which he led La Liga in goals scored, but, once again, it did not matter at all to the Madrid faithful, as their beloved club slumbered to another season without a title.
Fan sentiment towards Mbappe within the walls of the Santiago Bernabeu is at an all time low with PSG winning back to back Champions League title and Real Madrid nothing, and his outburst after the Real Oviedo game really sealed to many fans that there is a problem with him in the locker room.
But for those outside of the Bernabeu, Mbappe is still a hero, and they cannot help but wax poetic about his individual talent. Though the France national team's real story was how great the creative players were in the chances they created in the opening World Cup win over Senegal, Mbappe definitely deserved praise for his brace, including a wonderful hit for the second.
Wayne Rooney is a big Kylian Mbappe guy
Legendary Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is a huge fan of Mbappe, and he thinks that many people just are not appreciating him enough. He gave Mbappe a very lofty comparison to another Galactic Real Madrid icon who donned the No. 9, stating that the French international is the closest thing in the modern game to Ronaldo Nazario, even closer than Cristiano Ronaldo or anyone else.
Rooney said of Mbappe, via the Madrid Zone, “Look Messi and Ronaldo are two of the best, but Kylian Mbappé is as close to R9 as you’ll see. He’s skilful, drives at players, run in behind, score goals, and I think we’re at danger of not appreciating it.”
It is high praise from Wayne Rooney, but even Kylian Mbappe's biggest detractors will not argue that it is entirely unwarranted. After all, Mbappe is a tremendous athlete who is great at running in behind and scoring goals, and he does try to drive at players.
Real Madrid fans will point out, though, that Ronaldo had much more skill in terms of actual skill moves and for his size, was even quicker in those short areas and more effective at take ons. He was also a much better pure finisher, needing fewer attempts to score goals while also rounding the keeper and blasting shots with a ferocity few are capable of.
The Mbappe comparison to Ronaldo is a bit too flattering, though the similarities are, in some ways, there from an excitement and athleticism perspective. But the negative comparisons are there, too, like the inconsistenty for Real Madrid and lack of effort in defense.
