Real Madrid are planning a major defensive overhaul this summer. The departures of David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, and Dani Carvajal are all but confirmed, with the club keeping a close eye on the defender market ahead of the summer transfer window. The club was dealt a major blow with their number one target last week, and now the club has been dealt another major blow to their number two transfer target.

As being reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, Liverpool center-back Ibrahima Konate confirms he is close to signing a new deal with Liverpool, dealing a major blow to Real Madrid's summer transfer plans. Konate was one of Real's top two defensive targets this summer, but he is now off the table, forcing Los Blancos to scramble to find a new signing.

"We have spoken with the club and we are CLOSE to an agreement.

I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way… we are on it"
Ibrahima Konate

The blows keep coming for Real Madrid's summer transfer plans

This new update has the potential to leave Real Madrid's summer transfer plans in complete shambles just months before the transfer window opens. As mentioned earlier Real Madrid were dealt a huge blow to their persuit of Borussia Dortmund center-back Nico Schlotterbeck last week with the German signing a new contract, and now the same has happened with Konate, forcing the club to now look elsewhere for their new central defender.

The club has identified with backline as the weak link in the team and the area that needs to be improved upon the most if the club hopes to bounce back following back-to-back disappointing seasons. The club viewed Konate as a strong candidate to be the man to come in and bring solidity back to the defense, and had been rumored to be close to agreeing a deal with the Frenchman to bring him to the Bernabeu on a free transfer this summer, but it has seemingly all fallen apart for Los Blancos.

Who exactly the club with sign this summer is now the biggest mystery of the transfer market. With their top two candidates now off the table, they will have to look elsewhere and take a gamble on a signing, which could backfire for Los Blancos. Players like Como's Jacobo Ramon, Atalanta's Giorgio Scalvini and other young, inexperienced central defenders are now the main targets of the club, which could end up being a risky move to make if they want to get back to the top of Europe.

This may be the biggest summer transfer window in the recent history of Real Madrid. The level the team has been at the last two years has been far from the standards of Real Madrid and if the club hopes to get back to winning every trophy on offer, they need to ensure they make the right signings this summer or risk setting the club back even further than they already are.
