Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Chema Andres says that he would one day want to return to Real Madrid. Chema is currently on international duty with Spain's under-21 team, and he has had a brilliant start to life in England. He has played a couple of games for Brighton since his move to England from Stuttgart in the final days of the transfer window, and he automatically looks like he has always belonged in that team.
Chema sits at the base of Brighton's midfield and controls the tempo really well. His off-ball movement when the team is under pressure is really important for them to continue having the ball for an extended period of time. His defensive attributes are already some of the best in Europe, and he is finally getting the praise that he has deserved since his Castilla days.
Obviously, Chema wasn't really able to have an impact at Real Madrid, particularly for the first team, because of the limited chances that came his way during his time at Castilla. He only played there for a season and then left to join Stuttgart in Germany. He now claims that he would one day love to return to the club that made him what he is now.
Chema would've been perfect for Real Madrid right now
Speaking to Cope, he said, "I would one day like to return to Real Madrid, but I am not thinking about that at the moment." That is what you would expect a player of his quality to say when he's just joined a different club. He was obviously never going to talk about how he would want to join the club in the present tense because of his recent move, but it is worth noting that he is not closing the door on playing for Real Madrid completely.
There isn't any player who would do that, particularly if that player is from Real Madrid's youth academy, but he is also self-aware and smart enough to understand that there is no space for him at Real Madrid right now, at least according to the people who make decisions at the club.
If you ask the author, he would probably say Chema would have been ready to join Real Madrid, considering how well he is already playing for Brighton, the kind of profile that he is, and what Real Madrid are missing. Everything just goes hand in hand.
Because of their inability to sign Rodri earlier this summer, it would have been the best decision to bring Chema back home instead, simply because of the similarities that the two share. Obviously, he is very young, but there are so many midfielders in this team who started at a very young age, but they never got to the level that Real Madrid wanted them to get to.
Chema provides defensive solidity that Aurelien Tchouameni has shown during his time at the club, but he also provides a lot more than the Frenchman in terms of having the ball, passing around, and being available to dictate the tempo from deep.
Chema is not afraid to do the simple things. He is not afraid to make the boring pass, but he would always want to do it the best possible way, which is why Real Madrid should have gone for him. However, now that they haven't, it is good to see that Chema is not completely closing the door on a potential return to the place he called home during his formative years.
