When looking at Real Madrid's squad, they easily have one of, if not the most star-studded attack in world football. With players like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, and others, and with an experienced manager like Jose Mourinho at the helm, many figured Real Madrid would just run away with games this year and finally get the attack to click. However, despite the amount of talent, Real Madrid still haven't been all that convincing this season.
The team has been relying heavily on Kylian Mbappe for goals, already grabbing eight in the first seven games, whereas other attackers, most notably Vinicius Junior, have been struggling to find the back of the net. Aside from Carlos Espi, Real Madrid doesn't really have a player they can bring on off the bench to put the ball in the back of the net and put games away late on, and this is exactly where we have seen Rodrygo come in clutch for Real Madrid in the past.
Rodrygo's return can't come soon enough for Real Madrid
The Brazilian has been out injured since suffering a torn ACL back on March 2nd in Real's match against Getafe, and his presence has never been missed more than it is right now. As mentioned earlier, with Vinicius Junior struggling in front of goal, Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler having to prioritise their midfield roles more than getting into goal-scoring positions, Yan Diomande taking a bit to get up to speed, and Brahim Diaz having a few moments but not many, it put all the goal-scoring on Kylian Mbappe, and while he's producing now, who's to say he won't hit a slump down the road? Where will Real Madrid get the goals? This is where Rodrygo has thrived for Real Madrid in the past.
Rodrygo has proven to be a difference maker in the past and a reliable threat in front of goal, capable of grabbing a late goal to put the game to bed, and in a season where Real have already had a number of close calls, they need someone they can bring on alongside Carlos Espi or even a reliable player like Rodrygo, to come in and start if Vinicius Junior still hasn't found his form by the time his compatriot is back from injury.
We all know Rodrygo's goal scoring past not only late on in games, but also in the big games where it matters most, in the Champions League and domestically against the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Thankfully for Real Madrid, the Brazilian is said to be far ahead of schedule in his recovery, expected back sometime in December as opposed to the initial expectation of early 2027.
Despite the summer arrival of Yan Diomande and Carlos Espi, Rodrygo can still prove he has a place in Jose Mourinho's squad, and by the time he's back from injury could be stepping into a perfect situation to prove it.
