Real Madrid legend Karim Benzemahas not played at the highest level of European football since the 2022/23 La Liga season when he won the Copa del Rey, as injuries and fitness issues cut his career at the White House short following his historic Ballon d'Or season in 2021/22 when he practically carried the Merengues to the Champions League title - and we have not seen a season as brilliant in world football since.
Although Benzie is not the same player he was and is very far removed from his Real Madrid heyday or the French national team picture at the age of 38, he is still one of the best strikers in the Saudi Pro League. Last season, Benzema struck 17 goals in just 24 games for Al Hilal following a great tenure at Al Ittihad.
However, with Al Hilal signing Crysencio Summerville on the left wing and looking at possible options, including the mighty Harry Kane, at striker, it is possible Benzema could be looking at a new club this summer transfer window.
The Dream of Karim is uncertain
According to a report from Ben Jacobs of Give Me Sport, Al Hilal and Karim Benzema are still currently "engaged in talks" before the 2026/27 Saudi Pro League season. Benz still expects a "prominent" spot in the side, while Al Hilal are quietly looking at alternative strikers. And Benzema is not at all interested and "would not accept" any situation in which Al Hilal only make him active for the AFC Champions League and not the Saudi Pro League matches; he wants to play.
So if Benzema and Al Hilal cannot come to a reasonable agreement on a new contract or Al Hilal either find a new striker or put their feet down that they want him to only play Champions League games, then Real Madrid fans will have to watch the news cycle closely to see where their club legend lands next.
It certainly would not be back with Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid, as even Florentino Perez and Jose are not crazy enough to reunite with a 38 year old striker with fitness issues when they are already having trouble finding minutes for Endrick and Gonzalo Garcia, who are both potential superstar strikers of the future at the Santiago Bernabeu.
But Real Madrid fans love keeping tabs on their legends and seeing them do well in world football, and they will hope for a good solution for Benzema.
