When Xabi Alonso was appointed as Real Madrid's new manager last May, many expected him to be the man to lead the club back to their best days at the top of Europe. However, his time didn't go as many planned for a number of different reasons, ultimately resulting in the manager getting sacked in January after just eight months in charge. There's no denying Alonso is still a top class manager who will no doubt return to management at a top club in the near future, and latest reports suggest he could be on his way to one of the Premier League's big boys.

As being reported by David Ornstein on X, Chelsea are exploring the possibility of appointing Xabi Alonso as their next head coach for next season. The Spaniard is said to be open to the possibility, however nothing has been 100% decided yet as the Premier League side continue to assess their options this summer.

Xabi Alonso close to joining Premier League rival from his playing days

As mentioned earlier, while Alonso's time in charge at the Bernabeu didn't go as many had envisioned, it wasn't down to his own fault as he had a clear vision and was getting results but didn't have the full backing of the board or the dressing room which led to his downfall, causing many to think he's not cut out for the top level, which is far from the truth.

We saw it during his time at Leverkusen what he's capable of when he has the full support of the club and the players, doing the domestic double while going invincible ending Bayern's years of Bundesliga dominance. He's still a top class manager and still in the early days of his managerial career and will surely be back in the game soon. Many expected him to takeover at his former club Liverpool howver they are set to stick with Arne Slot, giving Chelsea the chance to make a strong run at the manager.

Alonso joins a list of a number of other candidates Chelsea are considering ahead of next season, with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, and Filipe Luis also among the names the Premier League side are considering.

One could argue that given his winning record at Leverkusen and what we was in the brief time he was in charge at Los Blancos that Alonso is the best choice for the job. When he arrived at Real Madrid Xabi Alonso had a clear and defined project and direction he wanted to take the club, and that is exactly what Chelsea need given the tough situation they're in at the moment. Xabi Alonso will no doubt return to management soon, and Stamford Bridge could be the place where he finds his footing again at the top level.
