It is clear to pretty much every single Real Madrid fan that Arda Güler is playing at an indescribably good level. He looks good after every season, and looks like a player who refuses to back down, even when there is a lot of competition in the squad.
Real Madrid have signed Yan Diomande for a club record transfer fee to play on the right wing – and would also become the first true right-wing presence that the club would invest big in since Gareth Bale in 2013.
However, Arda Güler has started both of Real Madrid’s games this season, and has looked incredible. He has been one of the best players on the pitch in both of those games, registering 12 key passes already.
He has an assist to show for his performances, and probably should have a couple more, because the Turkish international has been exceeding all expectations already.
If Yan Diomande does not play, Trent Alexander-Arnold may not either
That alone is not good news for Yan Diomande, especially if Jose Mourinho keeps playing Güler in this position. He will only get more comfortable with time, and as good as he is, he will never be able to bench Jude Bellingham, meaning that if he is to start in an advanced position, it will be in Diomande’s position. Unless he plays deep.
But if he keeps playing in that position, Diomande is not the only player whose chances he could potentially hurt. Denzel Dumfries has started both of the games that Güler has started as a pseudo right-winger, as he is able to provide width and defensive coverage when Güler drifts in.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has not started a single game for the club, at least officially, this season, and it seems like he would only start when there is a genuine right-winger present on that side. Not just to make runs in behind the defense, but also to help as a defender.
Trent is a capable enough defender, but either Mourinho does not feel he could hold his own without too much support for too long, or maybe it is the width factor that he is considering.
It seems like as long as Güler is in the lineup, and on that side, Trent’s chances of starting are going to be less. Hopefully I am wrong, because both of these players in the lineup could bring a lot of much-needed creativity for the team, but as it stands, that is how it has been in these two games. Trent has only played when Diomande has been on his side for a longer stretch, and it seems like until he starts playing regular football, Trent’s role will be limited.
I could just be wrong. I have no idea what goes on in Mourinho’s head. Maybe it is just temporary and in the next game, Trent and Güler start on that side. Fans will have to wait and see.
