Real Madrid won’t be able to sell Sergio Reguilon for an appropriate fee this summer.

Los Blancos have a “good problem” at the left back position. Marcelo is still an effective player, Ferland Mendy is emerging as one of the best fullbacks in the world, and Sergio Reguilon has been tearing it up for Sevilla this season. But Real Madrid cannot keep all of them.

While Marcelo has been linked to big clubs like Juventus, it’s hard to see the experienced Brazilian leaving Madrid. He has an important leadership role, and, as his penalty-drawn against Athletic Bilbao showed, he can help spark the attack.

Mendy is a favorite of Zinedine Zidane’s and a rare talent defensively. So that leaves Sergio Reguilon as the potential odd man out.

Real Madrid want to hold onto their young players, but they understand they cannot keep everyone they develop. And it does them no good to hold onto players whom they cannot guarantee sufficient minutes. As such, they sold Achraf Hakimi to Inter Milan for 40 million euros, so fellow loaned fullback Reguilon could have the same fate.

According to Jaime Marcos of TF20, it will be difficult for Real to sell Reguilon for his worth in this current market. (Recall that 40 million euros for Hakimi was well below what people initially thought Los Blancos would get.)

Per TF20, it’s most likely for Reguilon to earn another year at Sevilla on loan, which probably also would have been the course of action with Hakimi if Inter did not emerge as viable suitors.

Reguilon playing at Sevilla for one more year is making the best of the situation. He is honestly good enough to play for Madrid, but the club has the right balance with Mendy and Marcelo at left back. If Reguilon plays well enough and Marcelo retires soon, he could replace Marcelo, but isn’t he too good to be Mendy’s backup?

It’s a complicated situation, but it looks like Madridistas can expect Reguilon to remain on the books for one more season. Hopefully, he produces more excellence. Sevilla, for a fact, could really use him in 2020-2021, especially if they maintain their Champions League qualification.
