Real Madrid: Sergio Reguilón is worth more than people think

Real Madrid left back Sergio Reguilón is a wanted man, but do most fanbases understand how good he actually is?

When Chelsea started to be linked to Sergio Reguilón shortly after Everton reportedly submitted a transfer offer to Real Madrid for the left back, I raised a concerned eyebrow.

Reguilón can be a high-quality starter for a number of clubs in Europe, including teams playing in the Champions League. Because next season, if his loan at Sevilla is extended by Los Blancos, he will be a crucial Champions League player for Sevilla after helping the fourth-placed La Liga side qualify.

When considering the amount of minutes he played and his overall impact on Sevilla’s attack, it is fair to argue that Reguilón was the best left back in La Liga this year. Ferland Mendy of Real Madrid’s senior team should also be in the discussion and is the better player overall, but Reguilón offered Sevilla 2,500 minutes of high-class football at left back.

Reguilón didn’t just offer six goal contributions to Sevilla in La Liga. Per WhoScored.com, the talented 23-year-old had 1.6 dribbles per game, 1.3 key passes per game, and 1.5 fouls drawn per game. Defensively, he had nearly 3.0 combined tackles and interceptions, showing marked improvement in that part of his game.

Sergio Reguilón is still valuable to Real Madrid

So when I look at Reguilón’s statistics, I see one of the best left backs in European football and a 23-year-old who is really only scratching the surface of what he can be. Yet when I look at the proposed transfer offers – 20 million euros from Everton – I am perplexed as to how other teams in Europe don’t understand what Reguilón brings.

Ben Chilwell repeatedly gets quoted as being worth more than double that. I understand Real Madrid must be realistic. English players at Leicester City will always come at a premium price, and if Los Blancos could only get 40 million euros for Achraf Hakimi, then they must likewise view 40 million as their absolute ceiling for Reguilón, who isn’t quite as highly-regarded as the right back.

But still, Reguilón is too valuable for Real Madrid to sell at any price. They may have Mendy locked in as the starter for the next five years, and Marcelo is still a competent backup. Trust me, if you think he’s washed, ask Barcelona what he’s capable of doing.

Real can easily rebuff every transfer offer and keep Reguilón at Sevilla, barring Reguilón demanding a trade out. And it’s entirely possible he does demand a transfer after hiring Kia Joorabchian as his agent. Hakimi wanted to start immediately and didn’t see a future with Dani Carvajal in front of him, and Reguilón could do the same.

Next. Don't change your tune on Raphael Varane now. dark

But with clubs like Everton, Juventus, and Chelsea interested, Real can push for a higher fee. They can force the issue, pitting clubs with deep pockets and a need for a left back of Reguilón’s youth and quality in their side. With the right approach and the right clubs interested, Los Blancos can shut down any offer under 30 million euros for one of 2019-2020’s breakout stars.
