Isco finally signs his new Real Madrid contract extension until 2022
By Alex McVey
Isco has finally put pen to paper and renewed his contract with Real Madrid. Isco’s new contract extends his stay at Madrid until 2022.
Isco’s contract negotiations seem to have been going on for forever. About a month ago, I wrote that Real Madrid were on the verge of completing Isco’s contract extension. Now, it looks as if that moment has finally arrived.
Keep in mind, all the way back in April, Isco made headlines (or rather, headlines were made about Isco) for a social media post showing him eating a brand of chips marked with Barcelona’s logo. Apparently Isco’s choice of crisps was a sign that Isco planned on snubbing Real Madrid to sign for their eternal rivals.
All of that silliness is behind us now. Isco put pen to paper and signed a new contract extending his stay til 2022, with a release clause reported to be in the vicinity of 700 Million euros. Who knows what the financial state of football will be next year, or two years after that. But it’s safe to say that at least for now, Real Madrid can rest easy with the knowledge that no other team can snatch up the Magic Man from Málaga without Madrid’s consent.
In Isco, Real Madrid have locked down a generational talent who will be at the center of operations for both Madrid and the Spanish National Team for years to come. Isco is only 25, which means we may not have even seen the best he has to offer yet. The idea of Isco getting any better is just terrifying. To think that we can keep watching Isco do stuff like this for the next 5-10 years makes me tingle with anticipation.
By signing this contract, Isco has decisively put a nail in the coffin of the debate which has plagued Real Madrid for seasons before this: Who is better, Isco or James?
Well, perhaps Isco has not decisively proven that he is better than James. But he did win the battle for a more permanent place in Zidane’s lineup. Both Isco and James had to spend significant time on the bench. Both made the most out of their limited playing time. But ultimately, it was only Isco who was able to prove himself indispensable to Los Blancos. James was loaned out to Bayern Munich, and Isco stays in the Spanish Capital. A decisive victory for Isco, even if it’s sad to see James go.
I predict even bigger things in store for Isco this season. Last season saw Isco make the most of limited opportunities to eventually play a huge part in Madrid’s double-winning season. This season, with the goals from Alvaro Morata, James, and Mariano Diaz all missing, Real Madrid will need Isco more than ever.
