Three questions ahead of Real Madrid vs Espanyol in La Liga
By Alex McVey
How does Zidane deal with the full-back crisis?
Real Madrid were already in a bit of a tough spot at the full-back position, as both Marcelo and Theo are out with injury. But then, Real Madrid received some terrible news about right-back Dani Carvajal, one of the standout players against Borussia Dortmund. Carvajal has an infection in the chest, and could be out for up to a month recovering.
Real Madrid Twitter seems pretty conflicted about how serious this condition is. Either way, Carvajal will be missing the match tomorrow, which leaves Real Madrid in trouble at the full-back position.
This means Real Madrid youth product Achraf Hakimi, newly promoted to the first team from Castilla, may get his chance to shine. Normally, Zidane would trust Nacho to deputize for Carvajal, as he did when Carvajal went down injured in the late stages of the Champions League last season. But Nacho already has his hands full filling in for the injured Theo Hernandez and Marcelo on the left side.
The full-back is a really important position for Zidane’s tactical schema. It will be interesting to see how Zidane adapts to this injury crisis at the back.
