Add left-back Marcelo to the growing list of Real Madrid players who have been accused of tax evasion or money laundering. Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo have both appeared in court in the past few months, and it now appears that Marcelo will soon be doing the same.

According to multiple reports, Brazilian fullback, Marcelo, will have to return to Spanish court to answer questions on a possible case of tax evasion dating back from 2013.

The Tax Agency (AEAT) in Spain wants to take a second look at Marcelo reportedly committing tax offenses for the management of his rights through partnerships. The reports claim that Marcelo failed to pay around €400,000 in taxes during this time.

The case will be run by the Economic Crimes division of the Spanish government who will make the decision on whether there was a deliberate act made by Marcelo and his party to defraud the government.

Interestingly, Marcelo claimed this money that is being brought up in 2015 through corporate taxes, however, the AEAT thinks that Marcelo should have filed his taxes elsewhere.

Courtesy of Marca:

"“According to information in the newspaper El Mundo confirmed to EFE by the Prosecutor’s Office, the player declared the monies in 2015 through corporate tax, but the AEAT considers that it should have been done through IRPF.”"

I wish there was more explanatory information as I, like many of you I’m sure, am confused by all the abbreviated names and what exactly the AEAT is claiming Marcelo did wrong other than file his taxes later and in the wrong place.

José Mourinho is currently going through these same proceedings with the Hacienda board of Madrid (yes, this is the same division that prosecuted Ronaldo during the summer) for a similar discrepancy.

This shouldn’t be a serious case, although Marcelo will likely have to appear in court sometime in the next few months to answer questions. The worst that could come out of this tax evasion case is a hefty fine for the Brazilian, but it shouldn’t be too much of a problem for a guy who just a couple weeks ago signed a contract extension to stay with Real Madrid until 2022.
