Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski reportedly wants to make a summer move to Real Madrid. Should Real Madrid make him a transfer target?

Reports are suggesting that Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski wants a move away, with Real Madrid emerging as his most desired destination. Sky Sports, citing Marca, suggest that Lewandowski has asked his agent to let Real Madrid know he is interested in signing one last big contract in his career, and that he thinks Madrid would be the right club. The transfer tabloids seem to have picked this rumor up and ran with it, with Metro, The Sun, and Bleacher Report all reporting on the rumor from Marca.

The fact that all of these reports are coming from one article makes me a bit skeptical about the veracity of these claims. But nevertheless, Lewandowski has spoken before about his love of Real Madrid and his potential desire to play there. So, he could just be stirring up the press to get a new contract at Bayern, or, there could be something to it. Would it be worth it for Real Madrid to sign him?

Lewandowski definitely has the talent and top-level experience to make it work at Madrid. He’s scored 25 goals across all competitions thus far this season. Given Madrid’s problems in front of goal this season, there’s no doubt that Madrid could use some more goalscoring options. And with Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo both looking a bit stale, Florentino Perez will probably  be thinking about how to liven up the attack next season.

Nevertheless, I think we should pass on Lewandowski. There’s no doubt that he’s a great striker. His track record at the top levels of European competition proves that. And he could make a tremendous asset to this team.

But Real Madrid have other, better, younger options. Madrid is already facing the prospects of their older stars aging out of the roster. Replacing Benzema or Ronaldo with Lewandowski doesn’t solve any of those problems, it only magnifies them. Unless Lewandowski would be content with a super-sub role, I don’t see him becoming a regular starter for Madrid over the long term.

I would much rather see Real Madrid go after one of Harry Kane, Paulo Dybala, or Mauro Icardi, in that order. Each one of those strikers is 24 years old, whereas Lewandowski is 29. That’s a huge age gap, and would provide Madrid with a much longer term option at the striker position.
