My thoughts

I was genuinely stressing even before the match had actually started and from the starting whistle, it only intensified. Both teams were awfully scrappy and it was a messy game with Madrid’s midfield unable to get a firm grip on the match.

With possession 60-40 in Bayern Munich’s favor, things were not looking up for Real. Fortunately, the statement “possession without purpose” held true for Bayern Munich.

While the Bavarians dominated the match in the first half, the defense along with Keylor Navas did a very good job to ensure that Madrid conceded only one goal. Ramos and Varane were absolutely amazing as they held it down for their side, putting their bodies on the line. Varane, in particular, shone as he showed incredible skill on the ball when under pressure.

For me, the standout performers of the match were Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez.

Marco came on and lit the pitch up like kerosine over a forest fire. At 22-years-old Marco hit a pass from Vazquez one time, and don’t forget this is the Champions League semifinal. His goal turned the tide quickly and put all the pressure on Bayern to score.

Lucas Vazquez worked his behind off with every passing minute of the match. Lucas started the game as a winger and ended up as a right-back. This game alone shows just how great this player is.

Not only did he play in two different positions, he did them well. The 26-year-old is a true product of Real Madrid and embodies the true essence of this club. Don’t take my word for it, it was this man who got the assist on Marco Asensio’s goal.
