Real Madrid has secured a place in the Round of 16 after yesterday’s win against Roma, carrying on what has become somewhat of a tradition at the club.

When it comes to the prestige of football there are several teams and tournaments that come to mind. With the expansion of professional teams and leagues, continental cups have appeared around the world, namely the Americas and Asia.

But, there is one club and one competition that stands out above all else. Oddly enough those two have become synonymous with one another, especially in recent years. Europe is the Mecca of the footballing world, it is the continent in which all the biggest, players, teams and leagues reside.

Real Madrid is in a ranking of its own when dominating the European stage. While the competition has changed as time has past and more teams have been involved and the game itself changes, one thing has always remained constant Real Madrid’s footprint.

Los Blancos proudly wear the Champions League trophy patch on their jerseys with the number 13 inscribed. The 13 represents the number of times they have reigned over the continent as winners.

In the last 5 years, Real Madrid has won four UCL titles, three of those were won in succession. While the cabinets are full at the Bernabeu Real Madrid are insatiable to the UEFA Champions League.

In 2003 the governing body of European football elected to remove the two group stage process. Simply put, there was another group stage that took place after between the group stage and Round of 16 as we know it to be today.

Changes aside Real Madrid push on, as they have progressed into the Round of 16 ever since the change was made in 2003. Yesterday’s 2-0 victory over Roma on Matchday 5 ensures this will happen while still having another match to be played.

Looking back even before the format change of 2003, Real Madrid has progressed to the next round of the Champions League for 21 consecutive seasons. A record in Europe, and an absolute dashing one at that.

The draw for the Round of 16 will be determined next month on  December 17. While the focus is, of course, the domestic campaigns as it has been absent from Real Madrid in the last decade this team will surely come alive as the anthem is blasted through the stadium once again.
