Real Madrid came out of the tunnel with the same authority they displayed in the first half of the match, but that all came crashing down in the 60-minute. Los Blancos had their chances in the early goings of the second stanza but their failure to put it away hurt their chances plenty.

With Girona gaining confidence with their number of touches increasing they applied pressure to Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian keeper was helped out by the post on a couple of occasions but his luck would run out.

In the 64-minute, Sergio Ramos was shown a yellow card for a clear handball in the box which then resulted in a penalty for Girona. Cristhian Stuani would calmly put the ball past Thibaut to draw the game level.

With Madrid now on the backpedal Solari opted for attacking power with Gareth Bale, Vincius Jr and Mariano Diaz all make their way onto the pitch.

Despite the fresh legs though, Girona hit back once again and the goal was bound to come given complacency shown by Real Madrid. In the 75-minute Portu’s header sneaked right past Courtois for Girona’s second goal of the match giving them the 2-1 lead.

Looking deflated Real Madrid failed to bring the game back on level pegging. While there were chances, they came few and far between, unlike Girona who peppered the defence of Real Madrid.

Things went from bad to worse as Sergio Ramos was shown a second yellow for dangerous play and sent off. He will most certainly miss the next match due to an accumulation of cards but the Spanish Federation could now look into the second incident and hand the Capitan a longer suspension.

The 2-1 scoreline would hold despite Madrid’s efforts meaning they now sit in third place two points behind rivals Atletico Madrid. Just when things were starting to look fruitful Real were handed a massive blow to their La Liga campaign.
