Defenders

Raphael Varane (25)

Jose Luis Sanchez, one of Spains’ most reliable sources reported on La Sexta’s El Chiringuito TV that Varane has already informed his teammates that he will leave Real Madrid in the summer after spending eight seasons at the club.

If Zidane’s solid relationship with the defender doesn’t alter his decision, then it looks like he’ll be ready to leave the Spanish capital.

Verdict: With four Champions League trophies under his belt, Varane will likely look for a new challenge away from Madrid (Estimated worth: £100-120 million).

Sergio Ramos (32)

Although he’s not getting any younger, I don’t see Sergio leaving the club, especially with Varane’s unsteady future. The Andalusian bullfighter bleeds Madrid white.

Verdict: The heart and soul of this club. He stays.

Nacho Fernandez (29)

It seems like Nacho has been linked with A.S. Roma every summer since 2015. But the Madrid-born defender offers versatility at the back, and therefore must stay, especially considering the vital importance of squad depth in league football.

More from The Real Champs

Verdict: Keep

Jesus Vallejo (22)

The Spaniard was initially seen as a valuable piece of Florentino Perez’ promising Spanish talent pool. Unlucky with injuries, it is very unlikely that Vallejo will remain at the club especially with Eder Militao joining from FC Porto.

Verdict: Sell (Estimated worth £10 Million)

Marcelo (30)

I don’t remember Marcelo having as bad a season as this.

Despite always being a liability in defense, the Brazilian made up for it with his attacking prowess. Fingers may have been pointed at him due to Real Madrid’s constant exposure in defense and unless he rediscovers his form in the remaining La Liga fixtures, he could be forced out of the club with Juventus knocking on the door.

On a bright note, Zidane’s return to the club could be a serious game changer for Marcelo, as he is already being given more minutes.

Verdict: Keep

Segio Reguilon (22)

Perhaps one of Real Madrid’s few overachievers this season. The 22-year-old managed to win the fans instantly with his passion on the field. Former manager Santiago Solari deserves props for depending on him and effectively integrating him into the first team.

Verdict: Keep

Theo Hernandez (21)

As harsh as it sounds, Real Madrid signed the wrong Hernandez brother and it is looking increasingly imminent that Theo will either be sold or sent back out on loan.

Verdict: Loan or sell – estimated worth £15 million

Achraf Hakimi (20)

Arguably the most successful loan away from Real Madrid. Achraf has really proved himself in the Bundesliga and looks to follow in the footsteps of Dani Carvajal, who also shone in Germany for Leverkusen.

Having picked up a season-ending injury, it will be interesting to see how he fairs next year with Dortmund and whether he will manage to maintain his excellent form.

Verdict: Watch his progress

Dani Carvajal (27)

Again, not his best season, but remains the number one right back.

Verdict: Keep

Alvaro Odriozola (23)

Álvaro has shown positive signs when called upon. His explosive speed has been much needed in attack, and spared his blushes a few times when losing the ball or being caught out of position.

Verdict: Keep
