LB Marcelo

Defensively, Marcelo was weak, and his positioning can be criticized for causing Sergio Ramos to shuffle over to cover for him, giving Smolov the opening for Celta’s goal.

On offense, Marcelo was brilliant. He assisted Toni Kroos with a dangerous pass into the box and showed good interplay with Karim Benzema and Eden Hazard, as Real created their customary overloads on the left. But in all honesty, his attacking work isn’t nearly good enough to make up for his issues on defense. He’s at the end of the line, sadly.

Rating: 5.5 out of 10

CB Sergio Ramos

The superstar center back scored a perfect penalty to give Real Madrid the lead and did everything he could to support the attack, pushing up the pitch in search of the winning goal after Celta tied the game at 2.

However, Ramos left gaps defensively by being so aggressive. He wasn’t helped by having to cover for Marcelo, but his defensive work left something to be desired.

That said, we need to keep praising Ramos’ passing. He completed 95.5% of his passes and continues to set an example in this regard alongside Toni Kroos.

Rating: 6.0 out of 10

CB Raphael Varane

It would be harsh to fault Raphael Varane for either goal defensively, but the France captain wasn’t as in-form as in previous games. Varane will have better games, including, hopefully, against Manchester City in about a week and a half.

Rating: 5.5 out of 10

RB Dani Carvajal

Per WhoScored.com, Dani Carvajal recorded three tackles with two key passes and a pass completion percentage of 93.3%. Carvajal was key in supporting the Whites’ attack, but he was questionable defensively. He’s had a fantastic season at right back for Los Blancos, but there are times, such as in this game, where he makes frustrating decisions defensively. And like his teammate Marcelo, his crosses weren’t as pinpoint as they needed to be.
