COVID-19 is now directly affecting Real Madrid players, coaches, staff, and facility workers. On Thursday, the same day that La Liga and Champions League matches were postponed indefinitely, the football and basketball teams were moved into quarantine.

Just when you thought the coronavirus pandemic was bad, guess again. The virus running rampant across the world has now seen 130,308 confirmed cases, with 3,059 of them in Spain.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has affected Real Madrid directly and has caused the club to take drastic measures in order to keep players, coaches, and staff members safe and healthy.

The club’s website confirmed that basketball first team member Trey Thompkins had been diagnosed with coronavirus and because both teams workout and spend time at the Ciudad de Real Madrid training facility on a daily basis, every member of both teams have been put in quarantine effective immediately.

This prompted La Liga and UEFA to call off matches for the time being. Of course, Real Madrid football was scheduled to play Eibar in league play tomorrow night and Manchester City in the Champions Leauge round of 16 on Tuesday.

The basketball team, on the other hand, was slated to face Crvena Zvezda in EuroLeague competition tonight in Madrid, but that too has been postponed while officials decide how to proceed in dealing with the disease.

The plan, at least for now, is for the players to self-isolate themselves at their homes and train individually to stay in shape. The club will provide personal training plans for the two teams and players will be in constant contact with team doctors just in case any symptoms appear.

The player’s health is the priority right now and whether or not the season continues at a later date does not matter.

To all our readers around the world, stay safe, wash your hands, and avoid public gatherings if possible. 2020 is off to a freezing cold start, but things can and will get better very soon.

While we all want to see Real Madrid play – I was especially looking forward to the Man City match on Tuesday – they will finish the season out eventually and we will get our fill of football.
