If the season is actually over, who is Real Madrid’s player of the year?

Casemiro

The Brazilian midfielder has not only been the most consistent Real Madrid player this season, but he has played the most minutes of any player in the first team. As expected, the departure of Marcos Llorente meant there was no true defensive midfielder to backup Casemiro.

Before the coronavirus put a hold on matches, Casemiro had played nearly 3,000 minutes and has already made 32 appearances in La Liga and the Champions League alone.

Not only has he been the backbone of the Madrid midfield and one of the biggest reasons the club has a great defensive record, he has also been the most involved.

He is averaging over three tackles per match, nearly two clearances per match, and is making 2.1 interceptions per La Liga match. To say Casemiro has been brilliant would not do his play justice.

No one can win the ball back as consistently as the number 14 in white.

He has been the best CDM in Spain over the last four seasons and it’s hard to believe he is still exceeding expectations in his fifth year as the regular starter. It sure helps that he is playing with world-class midfielders Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, but even without them, I think Casemiro would still be playing at this level.

Casemiro has the highest average match rating of any Real Madrid player this season and without him, there is no way the team would be where they are right now.
