Real Madrid and FC Barcelona could compete head-to-head for Napoli center midfielder Fabian Ruiz and attackers Jadon Sancho and Neymar this summer, but they may also have eyes on Leroy Sane.

Before he suffered a serious knee injury against Liverpool in the summer, Leroy Sane seemed like a slam-dunk to transfer to Bayern Munich. The Manchester City superstar would be a perfect fit for Bayern as a technically-prolific, pass-first winger who can score goals.

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, however, might be in the mix. According to a report from Sport Bild, via Sports Witness’ Naveen Ullal, both La Liga giants “could threaten” Sane’s seemingly inevitable move to Bayern.

Per Sport Bild, Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić and Sane’s new representation had a “secrete meeting”.

More from The Real Champs

Bayern have been in hot pursuit of Sane since the beginning of the 2019 summer transfer window, and it would be a shock if they didn’t eventually sign him.

But Bayern don’t like to spend a great deal of money on transfers, with last summer’s acquisition of Lucas Hernandez for 80 million euros being an anomaly.

Sane is well-worth the money, but Bayern probably wanted City to lower the player’s asking price after his injury.

Although Sane wasn’t a regular starter for City due to the emergence of Bernardo Silva across from top-scoring winger Raheem Sterling, Pep Guardiola and the club are in no hurry to sell one of the world’s best wide players.

Real Madrid and, especially, Barcelona could have use for Sane, who is only 24. The Germany international is incredibly intelligent and skillful, and there are few better assist providers from the wing. His excellent free kicks also signify his combination of shooting ability and technical quality.

It’s good to see Real Madrid are doing due diligence on one of the world’s finest players, alongside their bitter rivals. While it would be an upset for Sane to choose anyone else but Bayern, stranger things have happened in transfer windows.

Sane would likely cost Bayern, Real, or Barça 100 million euros, which is similar to what Los Blancos paid for Eden Hazard last summer. Neymar and Jadon Sancho will be bigger targets for the Spanish clubs, and Kylian Mbappe is always the dream for Real. But if Los Blancos want more of a provider and can’t sign Sancho or Mbappe, then Sane is a sleeper to keep in mind.

In his last full season, Sane recorded an even 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.
