The Price Tag

About a year ago, Valencia signed Ferran Torres to a new contract with a 100 million euro release clause, designed to keep the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund away from the teenager. Now that he’s 20, Torres has only one year left on this deal before the release clause expires, meaning he would be able to leave for free in 2021.

Valencia will have to sell Torres, who has designs on playing for a bigger club. According to a report from Bild, via Bulinews.com’s Rune Gjerulff, Valencia will ask for 40 million euros in exchange for Torres in the summer.

This fee makes Torres the cheapest forward among those linked to Real Madrid, and he would be even less expensive than certain center midfield targets like Fabian Ruiz. Since forwards are both more valuable in general and more valuable to Real specifically, Torres looks like a fantastic deal for Los Merengues on paper.

It’s possible Real would have to pay more for Torres than Dortmund due to their greater financial power and standing as a league rival, but if Torres prefers to go to Los Blancos, then that difference is negated by the player’s wishes. Either way, Torres is much more affordable and achievable than the likes of Sadio Mane and Sancho in 2020.
