3. Raphaël Varane

Raphaël Varane has been at Real Madrid since 2011 when he was just 18. He’s now 26 and is still part of this Real Madrid team and playing a more important role than before. Like the rest of his teammates at the club, Varane seemed to have a post-world cup hangover. His performances in the 2018-19 season were disappointing and there were rumors of him wanting a change of scenery in the summer of 2019.

But with Zinedine Zidane’s arrival, he decided to stay and since then has recovered his form. He’s consistently putting in great performances, saves the team defensively a lot of the time and is one of the leaders in defense in the absence of Sergio Ramos.

While Varane has been world-class this season, the reason he hasn’t got much appreciation for it simply comes down to one man. Sergio Ramos. With the captain legend at his side, Varane doesn’t get as much credit as he should simply because he gets overshadowed.

This season Varane has been better than Ramos in most of the games they’ve played. He’s been more consistent than the Captain this season too but his performances have been completely slept upon. The Whites have been incredible defensively this season and that credit has been rightly given to the team as a unit instead of just one or two players.

But that has also meant that Varane hasn’t been rated as much as he should, because he’s been colossal defensively this season. He is Real Madrid’s best defender and one of the best in the world.
