Real Madrid players and staff will return to the Valadebebas to begin training on May 11th as they hope to finish up the league campaign. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois voiced his fears of the season being canceled and made some good points regarding the current standings.

“We are only two points behind Barcelona and if the season were to be canceled and Barcelona declared champions then it would be unjust,” Courtois said on Tuesday in an interview talking about if football will take place in Spain soon.

Courtois was asked about several topics regarding the landscape of European football and the answer that drew the most interest was this one. The Belgian international elaborated a bit on his answer and said the following.

"“We drew with them and beat them this year, we were the better team. I want to finish the season.”"

Thibaut is making a good point here.

He goes on to mention that in the case of the Premier League if the season was to be canceled, it would not be outlandish to award Liverpool the title given the large lead they have over Manchester City.

Everything the goalkeeper has said I agree with. As I mentioned, Real Madrid did not allow a goal against the Catalans in 180 minutes of play and held crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid scoreless over three contests.

The tentative restart is set to be in early June and there are still 11 games remaining for all 20 top-flight teams.

Considering the gap between first and second is just two points and the gap between second and sixth is 11 points, there is still plenty that can happen in the remaining 11 matches.

I think if the season was to be called off, the Spanish Football Federation would have to void it entirely like the Eredivisie did in the Netherlands. It would be wrong to deem a team the champion when there are still this many matches to be played.

If the roles were reversed and Real Madrid had defeated Real Betis and was holding a one-point lead over Barca, I would be saying the same thing. When the circumstances are out of the control of the clubs, players, and even the league officials, it is wrong to say that the 2019/2020 campaign has reached a proper conclusion.

Next. Why Real Madrid can be even better in 2020-2021. dark

While it is troubling to see that multiple leagues across Europe have canceled the remainder of their league campaigns, Spain seems determined to get things up and running again despite being so heavily affected by the spread of COVID-19.

All Real Madrid personnel will receive coronavirus tests tomorrow and we should receive even more news when teams get back to training in less than a week.
