After Luka Jović‘s arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt, it was quite obvious that Zidane would use Mariano as the third-choice striker behind Jović and Benzema.

Mariano spent almost the entire season out of the squad, not even making it to the bench. However, El Clasico in March somewhat steadied Mariano’s sinking ship as he made an immediate impact coming off the bench and scoring a goal in stoppage time to put the tie to bed.

Mariano has made just two La Liga appearances all season. With Jović set to miss five to six weeks due to injury, Mariano should and will get a lot of chances. He might even start a few games in order to give The Big Benz a rest.

The 26-year-old always shows hunger in his game and works extremely hard both on and off the pitch.

Such a work ethic and desire to perform and win games for Los Blancos should be rewarded with more opportunities. Jović’s injury means that chance of being Benzema’s understudy is Mariano’s for the taking.
