Left back

Los Blancos will have some maneuvering to do at the left back position this summer, because they may not be able to carry three starting-caliber left backs in their side. Marcelo has been linked to Juventus, but he’s probably not going anywhere. His value to the squad lies in his creativity, experience, and personal qualities as a leader and positive locker room influence. Losing him would hurt greatly.

Sergio Reguilon could, like Achraf Hakimi, be sold elsewhere or loaned again, but Real Madrid will want to keep him around. He’s been fantastic for Sevilla offensively and defensively this season. WhoScored.com has him credited with four assists 1.6 dribbles completed per game, 1.5 key passes per game, 1.5 fouls drawn per game, 1.8 tackles per game, and 1.1 interceptions per game. Reguilon is a star at the left back position.

But so is Ferland Mendy, who beat Marcelo out for the starting job pretty quickly. A solid carrier of the ball who has steadily improved his progressive passing, Mendy is the best defensive fullback in the world. He is impossible to dribble past and never goes light on his defensive duties. If there’s a play to be made defensively, the hard-working Mendy will put a tackle in.

Mendy is the starter of the future, but Reguilon as a role to play. And Marcelo isn’t gone yet. So Real Madrid have quite the talent at left back; it’s hard to think of a team in Europe that comes close to what Real has there.
