Defenders

Dani Carvajal – 7.5/10

Dani Carvajal was a machine in the right-back position. He burst up and down the football field all game. He was sound in his defensive role and had two big opportunities in the final third.

The first chance came early in the match when Sergio Ramos found Carvajal’s run. The Spanish right-back’s attempted chip got covered by Asenjo. Next, Luka Modric sent a defense carving pass to Carvajal, who then cut inside and forced Asenjo into a save.

The Real Madrid No.2 also completed two tackles, two clearances, and one interception.

Raphael Varane – 7/10

Raphael Varane and Ramos are one of the best center-back partnership in the world.

The French World Cup winner once again put in a solid shift in the back and kept Gerard Moreno quiet all night.

Varane won four aerial duels, had three clearances, and one interception.

Sergio Ramos – 7.5/10

El Capitan led from the front. He had a massive game in the back, keeping Villareal down to a single shot and zero on target in the first half.

The Real Madrid No.4 won two aerial duels, two tackles, and had two clearances.

Ramos also created a chance for Carvajal early in the game and made a fantastic run into the box that won the Royal Whites the penalty in the second half.

Ferland Mendy – 7/10

Another day, another excellent defensive performance by the former Lyon left-back. Ferland Mendy’s intelligent positioning allows him to avoid any danger from his side of the pitch.

He won two aerial duels, had one clearance, and one interception in the 90 minutes. Mendy also completed two dribbles and helped his team retain possession by always being an option out on the left.
