Playing more on the left side

Real Madrid started the former Santos man on the right side of the attack more frequently than the left, because there was less of a drop-off between him on the left and right than with Vinicius. And a lot of that is because of Rodrygo’s technical quality and unreal passing accuracy for a wide forward.

However, make no mistake, Rodrygo is best on the left. That’s the position he played at Santos, and it’s the position he prefers. He’s dazzled on the left at Castilla, and when he got a chance to play there recently, he knocked it out of the park.

Zinedine Zidane doesn’t have an easy decision to make, because Vinicius and Rodrygo are both good enough to play regularly and should get minutes at their preferred position. But guess who else is best on the left? Eden Hazard! And since Vini has seniority and is so good at creating for others with his endless running, it gets even harder for Rodrygo to play there.

But hopefully he can get more opportunities to play at his favored position in 2020-2021. Judging by his jaw-dropping six dribbles completed in the 2-0 win over Deportivo Alaves as the unquestioned most dangerous player on the pitch, Rodrygo could become one of the top players in La Liga as a full-time left winger. One day…one day…
