Real Madrid can’t take this low of an offer for Sergio Reguilon

Real Madrid left back Sergio Reguilon may want to start elsewhere, but Los Blancos need to be careful they don’t lowball themselves.

While Madridistas acknowledge that Real Madrid must raise funds this summer if they are to afford top transfer target Kylian Mbappe in 2021, it was frustrating for them to see one of the club’s most talented young players, Achraf Hakimi, leave for a mere 40 million euros.

The reality is that player values have plummeted due to COVID-19. Even so, Real Madrid, in their zeal to save money this summer, cannot afford to accept below-standard offers for their young star players.

In a recent report about Borja Mayoral potentially going to Lazio for a surprising 20 million euros (see, THAT is a great offer for Real!), MARCA’s Santi Siguero and Jose Felix Diaz snuck in an interesting line at the end of the article.

They say that Real would be “hopeful” to bring in that same 20 million euros for Sergio Reguilon. And they even add that Real would prefer selling Reguilon to loaning him at Sevilla for another year, which is a departure from what fans have been thinking this whole time.

In spite of Ferland Mendy’s greatness at left back and Marcelo’s remaining effectiveness as the veteran backup, Real Madrid should try to keep Reguilon. He was right there with Mendy as La Liga’s best left back and made a profound impact on Sevilla, playing a crucial role in their Champions League qualification.

Accepting a 20 million euro offer for Reguilon, even if his recent agent change indicates a big push to leave a la Hakimi, would be a poor decision by Real Madrid.

They already had to sell Hakimi for less than his true value, and 20 million euros is a terrible deal for Reguilon. Worryingly, it’s the offer they recently received from Everton.

Transfermarkt even has Reguilon at 25 million euros, so that is the minimum of what they should accept for Reguilon. He should be going for 30 million euros, or Real Madrid should say, “Sorry!” and loan him to Sevilla, where he’s sure to excel again.

Reguilon is a fantastic left back and the best available at the position on the market. Premier League clubs, potentially Chelsea, who want to pay double for Ben Chilwell from Leicester City should be willing to pay at least 30 million euros for Reguilon.

Real Madrid need money, yes. The economy is rough and they must also be realistic. Reguilon deserves to play. These are all true. But anything less than 30 million euros – and certainly 20 million euros – is an offer Real should not consider competitive. They are not Valencia nor Borussia Dortmund. The need to sell Reguilon should not be so pronounced that they are willing to accept substandard offers.
