Real Madrid are showing interest in Sporting Lisbon left back Nuno Mendes, but it’s hard to see a deal happening.

Sergio Reguilon could be on his way out of Real Madrid, as Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks to sign the 23-year-old left back who was one of the league’s best while on loan at Sevilla in the 2019-2020 season.

Now, Real Madrid are being linked to another young left back in European football, as the Record reports that Real have asked Sporting Lisbon for 18-year-old Nuno Mendes.

Sporting’s response? Pay the release clause, of course, which is priced at a whopping 45 million euros.

Now Mendes was worth that clause at the time, since he’s a promising teenage left back. Before COVID-19, it wouldn’t be been outlandish for a club to sign him.

But now, 45 million euros is a staggering fee, especially since Reguilon is only expected to go for 25 million euros. Yes, Mendes is several years younger than Reguilon, but the latter should still be more valuable since he’s a proven starter.

So for Real Madrid to sell Reguilon for 25 million euros and then buy Nuno Mendes for 45 million euros? There is absolutely no way Florentino Perez would even comprehend making such a deal, especially not during a financial crisis in which they are looking to raise 180 million euros in funds.

Furthermore, Real already spent 50 million euros on a world-class left back in Ferland Mendy last summer, and he was the signing of the summer, even ahead of Eden Hazard. Mendy quickly earned the starting spot over Marcelo and is probably the best defensive fullback in European football. The former Lyon man will start for years to come at the age of 25, so there is no need to splurge on a young left back.

Nuno Mendes is an interesting young player who looked excellent on both ends of the pitch in his 657 minutes of Liga NOS action last season. He can become one of the best left backs in the world, yes. It is worth it for Real to get to know him over the long-term and maybe one day show interest, but, right now, he is not a transfer target for Los Blancos.

The focus should be on Reguilon. If Real Madrid want young depth at the left back position and aren’t desperate to get the 25 million euros from his sale, they can easily loan him to Sevilla for another year. Sevilla have to play in the Champions League in 2020-2021, so they would be more than happy to have the star player.
