So many clubs lined up with interest in Real Madrid attacking midfielder Takefusa Kubo, but he’s most likely headed to Villarreal.

Real Madrid teenager Takefusa Kubo will be playing European football in 2020-2021. The Japanese attacking midfielder had a strong 2019-2020 season for Mallorca, looking a class above the rest. And that’s why he’s prepared to join a bigger club.

Even Champions League clubs like Ajax, Sevilla, and even Bayern Munich were linked to Kubo, but the attacking midfielder was seemingly always destined to stay in La Liga. It’s better for Real to have him obtain as much experience as possible in the same league. And while playing in the Champions League would have been huge for Kubo, it’s more important for him to play regularly.

According to a report from Mario Cortegana and Javier Mata of AS, Kubo will sign a one-year loan deal with Villarreal without an option to buy. Real were never going to allow a team to have an option to purchase the ultra-talented 19-year-old, hence one of the reasons why negotiations with Sevilla quickly fell through.

Real Sociedad, Sevilla, and Osasuna all traded roles as potential favorites to sign Kubo on loan, and another Europa League-level La Liga club was in the mix in Granada. But ultimately, Villarreal have convinced Real Madrid financially and in terms of their role for Kubo, with new manager Unai Emery reportedly playing a key role in that.

Villarreal will be replacing star man Santi Cazorla for next season, so Kubo can have a big role in a midfield that includes the talented Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

With Samuel Chukwueze, Paco Alcacer, and Gerard Moreno in the attack, Kubo will have plenty of weapons to feed, especially in comparison to what he was working with at Mallorca last season.

Kubo was one of the best young players in La Liga in 2019-2020, and he could emerge as one of the best overall players in the league next season at a club like Villarreal, much like Martin Odegaard did in 2019-2020 while taking on all the responsibility at La Real.

Set to be a full-time starter at Villarreal for the upcoming season, this is the move that the 19-year-old attacking player needed. Kubo is already a top-level dribbler and a goal-scoring threat, and at Villarreal, he can develop into a playmaker, too. Madridistas will be excited for what he does there in La Liga and the Europa League next season, assuming the deal goes through.
