Real Madrid: Three burning questions heading into the Champions League round of 16
By Ben Sundock
Can young players shoulder the load?
As I mentioned, the biggest question marks for this match are who will start at left back and can Eder Militao cover for Sergio Ramos in the heart of the defense?
Mendy has proven that he can produce offensively and has been one of the best defensive fullbacks as well. He never gets beat down the sideline and his ability to steal the ball off of a player is uncanny.
The concern here is that Militao has not played in as many matches or important matches as Mendy this season. Remember, it was Eder Miltao who started in the UCL group stage match against PSG where Real Madrid lost 3-0.
Militao was great in the time he got after the restart and I think everyone is more comfortable having the Brazilian start now rather than say five months ago. He has been working hard in training and has already developed a solid relationship with Raphael Varane.
The combination of veteran leaders like Varane and Dani Carvajal mixed with the impressive young talent of Mendy and Militao should help the goalkeeper tremendously.
