Real Madrid CM Fede Valverde

The introduction of Fede Valverde to the starting line up at Real Madrid was a breath of fresh air to the midfield. He has been one of the most instrumental figures in Zidane’s second tenure, pushing a certain Paul Pogba out of Real Madrid’s plans.

One of the biggest takeaways from his performances last season has been his versatility which allows him to play a wide range of roles in midfield. Zidane has a penchant for players who are willing to put in that extra chunk of work on the pitch.

He has played on the right of a midfield three. The Uruguayan has shown adept ball-carrying abilities and acts as a runner into the final third. His ability to win loose balls is an added benefit as he provides support to Casemiro and eases the defensive pressure on Toni Kroos

His presence has allowed Toni Kroos to play a more prominent part in the attacking build-up as Valverde covers much more space than Luka Modric in a box-to-box role. The Uruguayan is another player who could be essential in the absence of Hazard and Asensio due to his versatility.

This will be an essential part of Real’s play, as it allows Dani Carvajal to make attacking runs down the right as Fede is always in a position to support the Spaniard both defensively as well in offensive situations, popping up at the edge of the box to contribute to the attacking dimension of Real’s play, especially in transitioning situations. With the return of Fede Valverde’s Castilla teammate Martin Odegaard, both of them could show why they are tipped to be at the heart of the Blancos midfield over the next decade.
