Real Madrid CM Luka Modric

Luka Modric has been Real Madrid’s best outfield player to start the 2020-2021 season. The Croatian international enjoyed a stellar international break, playing at arguably a higher level than any of his teammates besides Spain and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

Per WhoScored.com, Modric is averaging 2.5 key passes per game and 2.5 dribbles completed per game so far this season. He’s had a minimum of three key passes in each of his La Liga starts and was unplayable vs. Real Valladolid, winning six dribbles completed with four key passes.

Additionally, he’s had at least two tackles and two interceptions in his last two matches against Levante and Valladolid.

Martin Odegaard may be a long-term replacement for Modric, but the midfield legend’s current importance to the club will skyrocket now that the young Norwegian is out of the lineup for a couple of weeks with this muscular issue.

Modric can carry Real Madrid far in this form, as there are very few midfielders in La Liga coming close to his level right now. Defensively, Modric is adept for sure, but his chance-creation and ability to continue serving up key passes will be of the most importance to Los Blancos with Odegaard out of the lineup.
