Real Madrid right back Dani Carvajal has already been suspended for this weekend’s match against Osasuna, but could he miss two matches in total?

In a bizarre twist of fate, Real Madrid star Dani Carvajal was handed his fifth yellow card late in the match against Celta Vigo when Zinedine Zidane was trying to substitute him in order to protect the player from picking up that booking.

Why was Carvajal booked just before exiting the game? He, as Phil Schoen put it on the beIN Sports broadcast, “took the scenic route” while being substituted instead of promptly leaving the pitch.

Madridistas jokingly wondered if this was another example of Carvajal trying to get himself booked so that he’d be suspended for an easy game, because Osasuna, Los Blancos’ upcoming opponents, are surprisingly in the relegation fight this season.

Did Dani Carvajal try to get booked on purpose against Celta Vigo?

Now, we’re not in a joking situation. Because MARCA’s top journalist Jose Felix Diaz reports that the Real Madrid standout is under investigation by La Liga. The league is reportedly reviewing the incident from Saturday’s match and are prepared to suspend Carvajal for two games if they believe he got that booking on purpose.

After this Saturday’s match against Osasuna, Real Madrid will play against Athletic Club in the Spanish Supercup semifinals and then Deportivo Alaves the following weekend. Nothing against Osasuna, but both of those games would be more difficult for Los Blancos.

It seems like it would be hard to prove that Carvajal tried to get booked on purpose, so Madridistas should not be overly concerned. Still, the prospect of not having Carvajal for an additional game is a troubling one, considering how much better Los Blancos are defensively when he’s playing. His absence would absolutely be felt against Raul Garcia’s side in the Supercup.
